"What did you get finished in homework club yesterday?" I asked.
Crickets.
"Did you go to homework club yesterday?" I added.
"I forgot," he answered without looking at me.
"Hmm," I raised my eye brow. "You left your lunch box up here on the table." I tapped it. "That's unlike you-- you always come back to the classroom to get your lunch box before you go home. What happened there?"
"I forgot." he repeated.
"Now I really don't believe you," I replied, leaning in and making him give me eye contact. "I think you deliberately didn't come upstairs so you wouldn't see me because I ..."
"Ok! Ok!" He broke like a toothpick, "I won't lie! It's true! I didn't want to go. I knew if I came back here you would make me go. I won't lie anymore!"
I started to laugh, because he caved so fast! "Well, you are definitely going today," I said as I walked over to him to give him a supportive pat him on the back.
But before I got there, he opened his arms wide. Now, I'm not a hugger; I'm more of a snapper, and maybe if I really like you, a fist bumper. This time, though, I couldn't see a way out of it. So I hugged him and patted his back.
"Are we still good?" he asked smiling up at me.
"Yeah, we're good," I paused, "as long as you make it to homework club."
