Rest Less

I have diabetes (not I am a diabetic). That's how I've been told to refer to myself so I don't make having diabetes my whole identity. This, apparently, will enhance my outcomes. I was diagnosed with diabetes when I was 14 and a freshman in high school. Not my best eating and decision making years.

People with diabetes are almost always dehydrated. It has to do with high blood sugar which forces the kidneys to work overtime to filter the blood, and blah, blah, blah. When we are dehydrated, our electrolytes and minerals are imbalanced and this can cause cramping.

I know this. I have known this for years. Yet, I still can't seem to drink enough water, eat enough bananas,  or take enough magnesium to stave off the leg cramps some nights.

Last night was one of those nights.

On a scale of,  one to oh, shingles (because yes, diabetics have an increased risk of developing shingles, too), last night's cramps were in the upper middle.  At about the grimacing and cursing  range. I have perfected the art of jumping out of bed, practically while still sleeping, to stand and try to release the cramp.

I get cramps in the worst places. Inner thighs, toes, glutes, and occasionally, weirdly enough, my abdomen. This usually results in a night of walking around trying to relieve the cramping. The best part is that all the pets are used to this. They all get up and follow me around from room to room while I curse, plead and contort myself into weird positions.

This morning at 5am when the alarm went off, all my pets stayed in bed while I dragged myself into the bathroom to start my day.

  1. Cramps of any kind just suck. Sorry this is one of the symptoms you experience. I'm so glad that your pets are there to support you. Sorry about this morning - starting your day alone...know that you were not completely alone! I was glad you were at school today, and I know your kiddos agree. :)

  2. Despite your pain, you had me churckling as I visualized your pets marching around the room and then sleeping in.
